Are Mous cases worth it? Our CMO's view

Piers, Chief Marketing Officer, Mous

"Are Mous cases worth it?" is one of the questions people ask most about us, and one of the things people search for most. I've been at Mous for six years. Plenty of people here have spent years of their working lives on these cases, me included, so this isn't an abstract question for us.

I'm obviously biased, so I won't just tell you yes. Below is the full picture: the work that goes into our cases, what reviews do and don't tell you, what we've got wrong, and then my view.

The engineering behind every Mous case

Everything starts with our engineering team. More than 30 engineers and designers work on our products, and we've put over £5 million into research and development. A really good protective case is a lot harder to make than it looks.

Here's what sets our approach apart:

  • Multiple materials, each with a job. Our protective cases combine polycarbonate, TPU, microfibre, glass-fibre-reinforced polycarbonate, aramid fibre and our own AiroShock. Each one goes where it does the most good.
  • Complex manufacturing. We overmould and co-mould our cases. We also lock the layers together both mechanically and chemically, so they stay together over time and the case stays rigid.
  • Testing, then more testing. Every design goes through round after round of prototypes and drop tests before we sign it off. We test other brands' cases too, so we know how they fail and how ours compare.
  • Precision. We make critical features to tolerances of hundredths of a millimetre.
  • Starting again every year. Every new iPhone means new or reworked tooling across the whole range. That gives us a chance to improve on everything we learned the year before.
  • Holding the line on quality, even when it costs us. We have scrapped finished products, with the stock already made, because they weren't good enough.
  • A warranty that backs it up. Our main cases come with a 25-year warranty against manufacturing defects.

None of that is the cheap way to make a case, and it's a big part of why ours cost what they do.

What reviews do and don't tell you

If you've searched for Mous online, you've probably found forum threads and social posts from people who had a problem with their case. They're right to post them. If you've spent good money on a case and it let you down, you should say so. That feedback is how we improve.

What those threads don't show you is everyone else. We've had millions of customers, and most of them never think about us unless something goes wrong. Hardly anyone goes online to say their case still looks great five years later, or that their phone survived a drop they couldn't believe. That's fair enough. It's just how the internet works.

You get a fuller picture from reviews. We have more than 100,000 five-star reviews on our website. You don't reach millions of customers, or that many reviews, without doing something right. The vast majority of people who buy a Mous case really like it.

What we've got wrong, and what we changed

The people who report problems aren't making them up, and we'd never suggest they were. No product is perfect, ours included.

It does help to keep it in proportion. Most people never have a problem with their case. When someone does, though, we want to hear about it, because some of our best improvements started there:

  • Debonding. Feedback led us to add mechanical interlocks that hold the layers together, and debonding has dropped sharply since.
  • Volume buttons. Feedback led to a new split design that's stiffer and more durable.
  • The Camera Control cut-out. Feedback led to a fully integrated button.
  • Magnet strength. Requests for stronger magnets led to this year's redesign, which has our strongest magnets yet.
  • The Camera Control glass. Feedback led to a new adhesive process and more clearance, so the glass seats properly.

We won't always get everything right. We will keep listening, and what you tell us will keep shaping what we make. If something does go wrong, our warranty has you covered.

So, are Mous cases worth it?

I think they are, and here's why.

We put more into a phone case than most people would guess: a dedicated engineering team, serious R&D investment, several materials engineered to work as one, and testing that plenty of designs never get through. Millions of people have trusted us with their phones, and most have had a very good experience. When we do get something wrong, we change what we make. If you've spent over £1,000 on your phone, those things matter.

If you just want a simple case and price is your main concern, there are cheaper options, and that's completely fine.

Thank you

Six years in, it still makes my day when someone tells us their case saved their phone, and it still hurts when someone tells us it let them down. Both matter to me, and both have made our cases better. Some of the biggest changes in this year's range exist because someone took the time to tell us what wasn't good enough.

So thank you to everyone who has chosen a Mous case, and to everyone who has told us where we can do better. We'll keep listening, keep learning and keep trying to make every case better than the last.

Have a question or feedback? Get in touch with our team. And keep an eye out for our upcoming post on this year's new range, where the engineers who led it will explain what they changed and why.
